Grid congestion and sustainability projects
Grid congestion solutions, including a battery for peak shaving and imbalance trading
An industrial client, Protix, with solar panels and industrial heavy installations, is facing a grid congestion challenge in Noord-Brabant, at Theodorus haven. Voltho was asked to perform a flex scan and develop a battery business case. Flexible contract options with Enexis, as well as a 2 MWh battery equipped with an Energy Management System (EMS) capable of both peak shaving and trading on the spot and balancing markets, were developed and compared. This enabled the client to make a well-informed decision.
Truck fleet sustainability, electric and biofuels
A logistics carrier active across Europe was looking for a truck fleet decarbonization strategy for the period 2025 to 2035. Voltho was asked to compare all powertrain options based on economic feasibility as well as CO₂, particulate matter, and NOx emissions. The analysis showed that the optimal 2035 truck fleet would consist of charging infrastructure and solar panels combined with new electric trucks and biodiesel. Financing and subsidy opportunities were identified and mapped out, enabling the carrier to define its investment strategy.
CHP carbon capture and batteries for greenhouse horticulture
A major combined heat and power (CHP) provider from Dordrecht sought opportunities to assist their greenhouse horticulture customers in the energy transition. A business case was developed for customer profiles focusing on local CO2 capture and battery solutions. With carbon capture, CO2 from the CHP is temporarily captured and used for the crops as needed. Batteries allow the CHPs to operate during the day, storing energy when electricity prices are low, while still providing CO2 directly to the crops. A comparison of suppliers was conducted, enabling the CHP and battery provider to assess the attractiveness of both options for their customers.
Solutions for grid congestion related to electric vehicle charging
For Endress+Hauser, an international player in instrumentation and measurement technology based in Naarden, a solution was developed to enable charging of the vehicle fleet during office hours despite grid congestion. Battery storage, AC and DC charging infrastructure, and installation concepts were compared through a cost-benefit analysis. Subsidies were applied for, and quotes for batteries, EMS, and installation were requested and evaluated.
Electric and hydrogen trucks: business case and subsidies.
For a company operating in the Netherlands, Van Hooft Transport, which runs a fleet of heavy-duty transport trucks operating in zero-emission zones from multiple company locations, several business cases have been developed. The total costs from 2025 to 2035 were compared for electric trucks, hydrogen-powered trucks, and diesel trucks. Based on this analysis, a strategic recommendation was formulated. In addition, subsidy applications were submitted for DC charging infrastructure at multiple locations.
Grid congestion battery solution & EMS test facility
A forward-thinking real estate developer, the Elektriciteitscampus in Arnhem, is developing an EMS test facility and is facing grid congestion. In 2025, we supported a 3.5 MWh battery solution, the EMS design strategy, and the procurement process. The EMS is being tested for grid connection, charging infrastructure, solar panels, building functions, battery control, and market integration, as well as for non-functional requirements such as protocol standardization.
